Obituary for MARY LEMIEUX KOSTER

Mary Lemieux Koster passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side on July 2, 2018. Mary was born May 17, 1929 and raised in Rocky River. She worked at the WTAM radio station before graduating from Ohio University with her Bachelors in Art History.

In her professional career, Mary was a unique contributor to the arts in Northeast Ohio. For 15 years, she independently coordinated the prestigious May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The juried exhibition showcased the notable achievements of Northeast Ohio artists. Known to some as “May Show Mary,” she took great pleasure and pride in her position under the direction of Tom Hinson,
Dr. Edward B. Henning and Dr. Sherman E. Lee. Mary also co-directed the art gallery at the New York Spaghetti House for seven years, drawing upon her broad-reaching personal relations in the area. Mary had an eye for eclectic beauty and humor in art, which grew from her keen intelligence, wise judgment,
a refined sense of taste, and an open mind and heart. She was indeed a rare gem.

In addition to her love and support of the arts and literature, Mary was an animal-lover, avid gardener, a creative cook, devout Catholic and matriarch to a family that lives on in her name. The depth of her love was shown every day in her devotion to “Give the best you’ve got anyway”- a true testament of her compassion, keeping the beliefs of Mother Teresa in her kitchen as a constant reminder of the way one ought to live and celebrate life in the face of any and all challenges, while taking joy in its experiences.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, ophthalmologist Dr. Charles “Ken” Koster. She particularly enjoyed their 10 years of service in the US Air Force. Exceptionally loving mother to Ann Marie, Thomas(Carol), Kathryn, Ned, and Carl, deceased(Robin). Extraordinary grandmother to Reed(Angela), Norah, Paul, Daniel, Lauren, Ben, Kenny, Jack, Harry, and delighted great-grandmother to Tommy and Andrew.
Family and friends will be received at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home at 25620 Center Ridge Rd., Westlake, OH 44145 on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 4-8PM. A Catholic Mass will be held at St. Raphael Church, 525 Dover Center Rd., Bay Village, OH 44140 at 9:30 AM on Saturday, August 4, 2018.

In lieu of flowers, please be so kind as to send memorial donations in Ben Koster’s name to the Open Hands of the Caring Penn Foundation, 27059 Center Ridge Rd, Westlake, OH 44145(c/o Marvin West).
