Obituary for MARY S. "SALLY" REED

MARY S. REED, known as Sally {nee Schell) age 91, died peacefully with her family by her side on December 20th 2017.
Born Mary Alfrieda Schell, nicknamed Sally, was born on September 2nd, 1926 in Sandusky, OH to Lawrence Schell and Emma Welter Schell. Sally attended St Mary’s grade school and high school in Sandusky. She graduated from St Mary’s of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican) in 1948 with a degree in chemistry. In 1951 she married her high school sweetheart, Jack Reed. Upon moving to Avon Lake, Ohio she worked for BF Goodrich as a chemist. They welcomed 7 children into their home and taught them to love, pray, laugh and give back to society. While raising her children, Sally pursued a career in nursing and helped her husband Jack found Arhaus Furniture. For 25 years, Sally volunteered at the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, both in Sanibel, Florida. Sally and Jack had a love for birding, which they pursued while on Sanibel and in their travels. She had a lifelong passion for teaching adults to swim, and a love for tennis that kept her playing with good friends late into their 80’s. Sally will be remembered for her spunk, propensity for speaking her mind, love of sports, beautiful gardens, wonderful Christmas cookies and most of all, her love of God and devotion to the Catholic Church–for years she sang in the church choir and was always benevolent to the poor.
Sally is survived by her children, Mary Schlessman of Pahala, HI John Reed (Denise) of Chagrin Falls, Oh, Ann Reed (John) of Durham, NC, Thomas Reed (Katie) of Anchorage, AK, Kathleen Allaire (Paul) of Athens, GA and Elizabeth Makman (Stan) of Kalispell, MT; siblings, Lawrence Schell, John Schell and cousin Joanne Laboe. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack P Reed, son Stephen P Reed, and grandsons Joshua Schlessman and Nicholas Reed.
Sally will be remembered by her children, 22 grandchildren (Emily Meeks, Michelle Maltese, Sarah Warren, Ryan Reed, Gretchen Harezma, Christina Bowman, Sarah Warren, John Reed, Elliott Reed, Kateri Schlessman, Lauren Paat, Joseph Paat, Isabel Makman, Anthony Paat, Samuel Makman, Mason Reed, Maria Makman, Tuyen Reed, Gloria Reed, Mary Reed, Ivan Silook, Joseph Reed and Gabriela Reed) and 13 great grandchildren. She encouraged her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to pursue their goals.
