Obituary for THOMAS M. KENNEDY, JR.

Thomas Martin Kennedy, Jr. was born September 7, 1923 to Thomas Martin and Mildred (nee Keidel) Kennedy in Cleveland, OH. Tom graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1941. His studies at John Carroll University were interrupted by World War II. Tom entered the United States Air Force in March 1943, where he studied Meteorology. He graduated from Navigation-Bombadier School and taught incoming students until December 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1947. After the war, Tom graduated from John Carroll University with a major in mathematics. Tom then attended law school at Western Reserve University, earning his LLM in 1948. He became a member of the Ohio State Bar in 1948.

Tom married Margaret Ann (“Peg”) (nee Little) on October 15, 1949. Tom and Peg settled in Tom’s home town of Lakewood, Ohio, where they raised five children, Thomas M. Kennedy, III (deceased), Nancy E. Kennedy (Ladd Leavens) of Mercer Island, WA; Mary Jane Kennedy (Daniel Dabbelt) of Boston, MA; John W. Kennedy (Rosalie) of Moraga, CA; and Terence M. Kennedy (Cristina) of Westlake, OH. Tom and Peg were married for 65 years and were active members of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish in Lakewood, OH, as well as St. Christopher Parish in Rocky River, OH.

Tom entered the general practice of law with his father in the Leader Building in Cleveland, later joined by his brother Donald Kennedy. After his father retired and Don moved to Michigan, Tom moved his practice to Lakewood. Tom became the assistant Law Director in Lakewood in 1970, and then the Law Director in 1977. On March 24, 1979, Tom was appointed Chief Referee and Acting Judge for the Lakewood Municipal Court, from which he retired on August 31, 1990. Tom was a member of the Cleveland Bar Association, Cuyahoga County Bar Association, Lakewood Kiwanis, Lakewood Elks Club, and Lakewood Country Club.

Tom passed away peacefully on October 26, 2019, surrounded by his four children. He was predeceased by his wife Peg and his brother Roger Kennedy. He is survived by his loving children, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Carol Donnelly of Rocky River, brother Donald Kennedy of Lansing, MI, and sister-in-law Barbara (“Bobbie”) Kennedy of Avon Lake, and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be offered for Tom at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2019, at St. Christopher Church (20141 Detroit Road, Rocky River). EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery (14609 Brookpark Road, Brook Park). Friends may call in the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Westlake (25620 Center Ridge Road) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Ignatius High School or a charity of your choice.
