Obituary for ROBERT FRANCIS MONROE

ROBERT FRANCIS MONROE, born October 26, 1931, in Cleveland, died peacefully at home in Rocky River, Ohio, on Sunday morning, October 28, 2018, at age 87. “Bob” was the most devoted husband of 55 years of the late Mary Joseph O’Neill Monroe (d. 2013); devoted father of Robert F. Jr., Michael J. (Laura Davis), Mary C. “Kate” Straub (Michael), Gerald A. (Coleen Kelley), Dennis O., and John P. (deceased); dearest grandfather of Erin, Casey and Brendan Barry; Elizabeth, Anne and Grace; and loving great-grandfather of Connor Robert Jastromb. Robert was the beloved brother of William A. (Alice nee Kelly) of University Heights, Mary Rita Monroe O’Donnell (Charles) of Providence, R.I., John J. (Betty Ann nee Ackermann), Anne Therese (“Nancy”) Monroe Hill (Ward) of Willoughby, Marguerite (“Babe”) Monroe Walton (Joseph) of Jamestown, Pa., and Shaker Heights, and Suzanne Monroe Cox (Thomas) of Euclid, all save Uncle Joe deceased. “Bobby” was the last surviving child of east-side builders Gerald A. and Lauretta (nee Garry) Monroe, whose homes at Berkshire Road and Linwood Park were beacons of kindness for decades; now at last may the Reunion begin. Having early formed a lifelong affection for Palm Springs, Palo Alto and his dear ones there, Bob graduated from St. Ann School in Cleveland Heights in 1945, Saint Ignatius High School in 1949, and John Carroll University in 1953. He served his country faithfully as an officer in the United States Navy in the Far East and the Mediterranean 1953-1955 aboard U.S.S. Aucilla (AO-56) and as Commander in the United States Naval Reserve until 1991. In his career Bob worked with among others Junior Achievement Centers of America Inc., Electronic Tabulating Co., Mandate Corp. and as chief information officer of Sealy Mattress Corporation. Ever generous with his time, self-effacing and without complaint to the last, he neglected advancement to help many carry their burdens, and with his siblings volunteered much to Catholics United for the Faith at its founding. Mary and Bob raised their family from 1958 to1992 in Lakewood. Friends may call at the McGORRAY-HANNA FUNERAL HOME OF WESTLAKE, 25620 Center Ridge Rd., FRIDAY, Nov. 2nd from 4 - 8 pm. Funeral Mass, St. Luke Church (Clifton Blvd. at Bunts Rd., Lakewood) Saturday, Nov. 3rd at 11:00 am. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Peter The Rock Media, 145 Ken Mar Industrial Parkway, Broadview Heights, Ohio 44147.
