Obituary for JEAN M. HEINE

Jean M. Heine, age 94, died peacefully on December 1, 2018. Jean was born August 14, 1924 in Cleveland to Hermina (nee Schwartz) and Anton Gies. She grew up in the Old Brooklyn area of Cleveland and attended Cleveland schools, graduating from West High School. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University, with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in French. In college she also studied German, Spanish and Italian, and became proficient in the DeSauze method of teaching foreign languages. Upon graduation, she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She was employed by the Cleveland Board of Education for 42 years, first as a teacher of foreign languages at West High School, and later as a case worker and administrator in the Bureau of Attendance. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Germany, and later travelled extensively in Europe. Jean is survived by her daughter Dr. Karen (Rolfe) Egenes (Clarendon Hills, IL). She was beloved “Gigi” to granddaughters Kristen Egenes (Centennial, CO), Elizabeth Egenes (Clarendon Hills, IL), Gretchen Hollrah (Denver, CO), and Paula (Mark) Bullard (Lakewood, OH), as well as six great grandchildren; Sybrand Braakman, Saskia Braakman, Steyn Braakman, Sam Hollrah, Lucy Hollrah, and Alex Bullard. Jean’s cousins Rev. Christopher Schwartz and James (Glenda) Schwartz also survive. Jean was preceded in death by George, her husband of 53 years, and her son, Dr. Karl Heine (Kikue). In retirement, Jean worked briefly as a tour guide, and was active in a variety of quilting groups. She was co-founder of the “Elderberries”, a support group for bereaved widows. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, December 29th at St. Raphael Church, 525 Dover Rd., Bay Village, with a reception following. Preceding the Mass, Visitation will be held at 9:45 AM in the church vestibule. Private Interment at a later date at Holy Trinity Church Cemetery, Avon, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean’s name may be made to Easter Seals of Northern Ohio, 2173 North Ridge Road, Suite G, Lorain, OH. 44055.
