He was born to Carl John and Helen Koster in March, 1927 and grew up on the West side of Cleveland, Ohio. While at Rocky River High School, he met his match, Mary Joanne Lemieux. Ken and Mary spent 65 glorious years of love and happiness together, which they shared with family, friends, neighbors and everyone they encountered. Ken continued his education after high school at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, and completed his Bachelor’s Degree at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, while playing football at both institutions. He completed his service as Chief of Ophthalmology at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS in 1963.In military retirement, Dr. Koster made a profound and significant impact on the Cleveland medical community. His supreme compassion and benevolence touched every one of his patients spanning 45 years of service dedicated to the people of Northeast Ohio. His ophthalmological practice, started in Lakewood, has served much of the West side of Cleveland and continues treatment and care for the residents of Northeast Ohio today. He was a founding member of St. John Medical Center, served as President, sat on the Executive Board and dedicated himself to furthering the mission and values of the hospital for over 25 years. Above all else, Ken Koster was committed to the service and care of others; he was the last physician in Cleveland to make house calls.
