Obituary for ROBERT M. LAWTHER

THE HONORABLE ROBERT M. LAWTHER age 90. Beloved husband of Kathleen M. (nee Monahan); step father of Chuck Rickard (Pamela) and Laura Rickard (Kate); dear grandfather of Danny, Julie, David and Matthew. Passed away Saturday November 4, 2017. Bob lived a lifetime of public service. He was a member of Lakewood City Council for 6 years and Mayor of Lakewood for 13. Elected twice to Common Pleas Court, he served as a visiting Judge from 1988 to 2004. Elected to The Lakewood High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 1988, He was the only honoree to serve in all three branches of government. After service in the U.S. Navy Radar Program, he graduated from the College of Wooster and Western Reserve University School of Law. Always active in musical organizations, he wrote the words and music for a student musical comedy at Wooster in 1948 and directed his fraternity Glee Club. He later formed a Barbershop Quartet in Lakewood. He formed the West Shore Chorale in 1968 and was it’s first President. He asked Lakewood church soloists to recruit other talented singers to perform the kind of classical music not often heard on the west side. Lawther sang tenor in the group for many years. He directed the Westwood Country Club Chorus for 20 years and performed all over Cleveland. He was a long time member of Westwood and the Rocky River Rotary Club. He established the first full time municipal Office on Aging in Ohio, initiated collective bargaining agreements for city employees, and with Nick Mileti, founded the Lakewood Park Band Concerts. As President of The Mayors and City Managers Association for two terms, he played a major role in the establishment of RTA and The Regional Income Tax Authority. As Chairman of Lakewood Hospital’s Board of Trustees, He spearheaded the growth of Lakewood Hospital and built two parking garages. He was especially proud of the decision to build Winterhurst Ice Rink. He was the only Lakewood Mayor to be elected President of the Ohio Municipal League of 66 cities and villages(1975). A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Thursday November 9, at 11:00 AM in The University Circle United Methodist Church, 1919 East 107th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44106. John Cregan Chapel Fund at EnnisCourt, 13315 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, Ohio, 44107.
