Obituary for ELMER ANTHONY SPREITZER

Elmer Anthony Spreitzer passed away on October 21, 2017. A Mass of Celebration of Life will be held at noon (with visitation beginning at 11) on November 11, 2017 at St. Mary of the Woods, 35755 Detroit Road, Avon, Ohio.

He was born October 29, 1936 to Louis and Cleo Spreitzer in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of six children. He proudly served in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division, trained as a cryptographer. He married his wife of 53 years, Elaine, on June 6, 1964. He received his Bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University, Master's degree from Case Western Reserve University, and Ph.D from The Ohio State University.

Elmer was a professor of sociology with a specialty in sport sociology at Bowling Green State University for more than 30 years. He loved teaching, offering wise counsel to young people and encouraging his students as they departed class on Friday afternoons with the admonition to have a “serene weekend.” To his colleagues, he was an avid reader - never without reading material in hand - attentive listener, and one who was always ready to lend a helping hand or share an article related to their research or teaching. He never met a stranger, leaving those with whom he interacted with a smile on their face. He was a compassionate, principled man who was an active parishioner at St. Aloysius Parish for 52 years, and he was a regular volunteer at the St. Louis Soup Kitchen. He passed on his love of nature to his grandchildren with family traditions at Wintergarden Woods, 577 Foundation, and Sidecut Park. He had a passion for music and was a regular concert goer at Toledo Symphony Peristyle and the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance, the location of his first date with Elaine. He was an avid traveler and especially loved holiday cruises and vacations on Lake Michigan with his grandchildren. He was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians, attracted by the sport which, like life, has no clock.

He is survived by his wife Elaine, daughters Gretchen (and son-in-law Robert Schoeni) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Libby Showalter of Bay Village, Ohio, four grandchildren (Maddie and Sophie Schoeni + Michael and Max Showalter), brother Ken, sisters Mary and Carol, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers (Louis and Eugene).

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Aloysius School (http://www.staloysius.tld.pvt.k12.oh.us/) or to Ann Arbor Active Against ALS (http://www.activeagainstals.org/)
